The timing of the Transfiguration in all the Synoptic Gospels is important. It comes immediately after Jesus reveals to His disciples His coming suffering, death and resurrection. Just before that Peter had professed his belief that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, the Christ, the Saviour King. It was too much for the disciples to put these two things together. Peter wanted to hear nothing about it. Then, a few days later, Peter with James and John is brought up a mountain where they get a glimpse of Jesus in His divine glory. He is accompanied by Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, the source of God's will for His people. And then, the voice comes from the cloud (signifying the presence of God Himself), "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favour. Listen to him." And that is what we need to do also. To listen to His message as it comes to us in the Gospel but also to listen to what He says to us each day through the people and experiences of our lives. It may not always be what we want to hear but it is always an expression of His love.
