One day Jesus "summoned" those He wanted, and among these He singled out twelve men whom He 'appointed'. The 'appointment' was to be as His close companions and to be sent in His name to spread the good news of the Kingdom. Maybe the most striking is the last name and the comment that Judas was "the man who was to betray him". How could one of those "summoned" and "appointed" turn against Jesus as Judas did? There is a great mystery in this. But in a real sense we are all of us 'special' - each Christian is not only a follower of Jesus but one whom He has 'summoned' (called) and 'appointed'. At our Baptism and Confirmation we given a new name, our Christ-name, just as Jesus gave a new name to Peter. Yet in our own case, surely we know we are weak and sinful, and that it is only God's love that keeps us from betraying Jesus. Are we surprised that people He had chosen can turn out to be seemingly 'bad choices'? Let me speak about my own fears and weaknesses to Jesus on the cross because He has chosen me.

Jesus, give me the strength to be faithful to my call as a co-worker with You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christian communities may welcome ever more completely the Lord's invitation to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
