We can often have very short memories when it comes to the ways in which God has blessed us. When confronted by obstacles or challenges, fear can possess us. We can find ourselves wanting to "return to Egypt," forgetting how difficult our past may have been there. The words of Moses are as valid now as they were then: stand firm, and have faith. God has not forgotten or abandoned us. God will see us through whatever we must face. When we are faced with a difficult or fearful situation, let us confidently expect the grace of God.
Wouldn't it be nice to have some sort of sign that God was truly present! Most of us at one time or another have wished for some sort of confirmation so that our fears could be overcome. The people ask Jesus for a sign, and He replies with just a bit of irritation that only one will be given: the sign of Jonah. That is all that we need. This sign is simple; it is the sign of new life. Death, destruction, tragedy and failure are never God's final answers. God is the one who raises us to new life in both this world and the next. With God, we can never be crushed or defeated. Our struggles become stepping stones to a new and greater life. If we but look back on our life, we will see many signs that God was indeed present. Our very lives are a witness to the presence and love of God.
Lord, make me aware of the many ways God has blessed me.
