Speaking on the commandment "Do not kill", Jesus goes to the root of murder which is anger. For Jesus anger is as sinful as murder itself. The two examples given (Mt. 5:23-24,25-26) emphasize the importance of reconciliation as an expression of brotherly/sisterly love. As such, fraternal reconciliation should take precedence over sacrifice and acts of worship (Mt. 5:23-24). This means that in our relationship with God prayer, worship and other pious practices would have no value if we refuse to live in loving relationship with others. Jesus strongly stresses that a broken relationship demands urgent reconciliation which reflects a sign of God's presence and love.
A parallel can be drawn between the first reading and the gospel message on the power of reconciliation. This is seen in the promise of rain through the prophet Elijah after the Israelites had declared themselves for Yahweh. The earlier instances of fire and wood proved to the people Yahweh's sovereignty and the sign of the rain would certainly demonstrate this fact to the Baalist king.
Therefore, let us rid ourselves of the anger we have in our relationship with others and even with God and ask our loving God for the grace of reconciliation so that our covenantal relationship with God can be renewed.
Lord, help us in our broken relationships with others so that the love of God can be rekindled in our lives.
