Is there a contradiction between the story in the First Reading and the Gospel? In the Gospel Jesus warns us against taking revenge. He tells us to offer the wicked man no resistance, but to "turn the other cheek". Yet, in the First Reading did Naboth not do the right thing in refusing to surrender his vineyard just because the king (who sounds like a spoilt child) wanted it? It was ancestral land and he felt he could not give it away. He paid a high price for his courage. Through the machinations of the king's evil wife, Jezebel, Naboth was condemned to death - in the name of religion. The king went along meekly with her plan. But one needs courage to stand up for justice, especially against those who have power.
However, Jesus' teaching is not about returning evil for evil. It requires a lot of courage to turn the other cheek, not to hit back and lower oneself to the same level as one's attacker.
Give me the courage, Lord, always to act positively towards others.
