There seem to be contradictory statements in today's readings. In Acts Paul and Barnabas tell the Christians of Antioch in Pisidia that "We all have to experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God." Yet, in the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples: "Peace I leave with you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you." Deep down there is no contradiction. Peace is not something external, the mere absence of violence. It is a deep, inner harmony when I know I am in the right place and doing the right thing. Following Jesus and his Way will almost inevitably bring me into conflict with those who do not share my vision of life and even find it threatening. If I were to avoid that conflict to avoid trouble, if I were to compromise with my values, I would lose my sense of peace. I am also called to be a source of peace to others.
