Lent is a time for penance. What form should it take? We can sometimes be very limited in our understanding of what to do to keep the spirit of Lent. Traditionally, we tend to 'give up' things that we like. In the old days, people really had to fast, that is, eat less food. But the readings today suggest that, while this is good in itself, there are other and perhaps better ways. Jesus, in contrast to the Pharisees and the disciples of John the Baptist, did not fast. But He certainly served His Father in much more significant ways. The First Reading, too, suggests that sackcloth and ashes may not be the best. These can actually be things that lead to a certain feeling of superiority. A much better way, says the prophet, is to bring freedom into people's lives and provide help to the needy. How do I intend to be, in a very practical way, a source of support and help for others this Lent?

A humbled, contrite heart You will not spurn.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the sick, and especially the poorest among them, may receive the care and medical treatment worthy of human beings.
