After healing so many people, Jesus was becoming a local sensation. So, some people wanted to be with Him, perhaps to live in the shadow of His popularity or even to find the secret of His special powers. We are told today of two people who approached Him. A Scribe said he would follow Jesus wherever He was going to go. Jesus neither accepts nor rejects him but simply says that he needs to realise that the Son of Man has no home to call His own and, by implication, that the disciple must be ready for the same kind of life. We do not know if the Scribe took up the challenge; we suspect he did not. Another man said he would follow Jesus after first burying his father. Very likely, his father has not yet died but, as a dutiful son, he wants to wait until that time. But the only time to follow Jesus is now. Our following of Jesus has to be unconditional, which is not to deny our obligations to family and friends. Do I put conditions to my following of Jesus?
Lord, teach me to be generous, to give and not to count the cost.
