We are coming to the end of Jesus' public life in Luke's Gospel. Jericho is Jesus' last stop before He reaches Jerusalem, the scene of His passion, death and resurrection. In Mark's Gospel, today's story about the blind man takes place as Jesus is leaving Jericho. Luke puts it as Jesus is entering the city. The man is sitting at the side of the road, a poor man in need. He calls out to Jesus for help and compassion. The people try to get him to keep quiet but he calls out all the louder. He will not be deterred in his search for Jesus. When Jesus asks him what he wants, he replies that he wants to see again. Because of his faith, he is able to see and, because he can see, he becomes a follower of Jesus. This, in fact, prepares us for the next story - the conversion of Zaccheus, a chief tax collector, whose eyes were opened. We, too, can hardly ask for anything more necessary than to be able to see clearly and understand the Way of Jesus. When that happens, we know that the only possible response is to walk along that Way.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
