"You form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the capstone". Scholars argue that Paul could not have written such words, because in 1Cor 3:11-12 he affirms that there is no other foundation than Jesus Christ and so he would not call the apostles and prophets a "foundation". It is good to remember that Jesus is indeed the foundation of our lives, but at the same time we may meditate on the wisdom of Jesus in choosing to build His Church, not with the help of angels, but with the help of human beings, the Apostles. At the same time we may note that the writer of Ephesians is interested in the image of the capstone, which holds the whole building together. Without entering into a discussion whether Paul was the author of Ephesians or not, we should remember always to read Scripture with an open heart and mind. Jesus was not restricted by His images, and had the freedom to talk about planting seeds and casting fishing nets as He wove a rich tapestry of the Kingdom of God. Neither is Paul so dominated by any particular image that he cannot be free to think in other ways.
Lord, grant us the grace always to read Scripture with an open mind and heart.
