In today's first reading we are reminded that Christians may sin and fall from time to time. If we should sin, we should not protest our innocence, nor weep for a shattered reputation. Instead we must be realistic and honest about our failures. We should listen to the voice of God comforting us and strengthening us.

That is the real answer to sin for us who are Christians - openness and honesty to God about our guilt. If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There is the problem. Our natural tendency is to deny our fault, our guilt. We automatically begin to excuse ourselves as soon as we are accused of having done anything wrong. With God, however, what is required is not an explanation but a willingness to admit our guilt and to repent. To repent is to agree with God's verdict on our failure.
