The readings today show us two sides of our God. On the one hand, there is the extraordinary dialogue between Abraham and the Lord. God wants to destroy Sodom because of its terrible wickedness. Is God going to destroy the good with the bad? The just with the unjust? All right, says Yahweh, if there are just 50 good people in Sodom, it will not be destroyed. Abraham continues to bargain right down to 10 people. Abraham, of course, knows that our God is a compassionate God. And Jesus will come not to judge the world but to save it. On the other hand, the Gospel reminds us that, when it comes to following our God, we cannot lay down conditions. He wants us to give our whole selves to him and to be ready to follow Jesus all the way. There is no contradiction between these two images of our God.

Anyone who follows me will have the light of life.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
