The prophet Hosea speaks about the everlasting love of God for us. He invites us to go to the Lord, who alone can put us right. He states in clear terms that the Lord wants us to love Him with a steadfast heart. The burnt offerings and sacrifices are mere show.
The idea of interior conversion and interior love for God in contrast to mere observances of the letter of the Law is very well brought out in the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. The Pharisee has missed the goal with his self praise and rigid observances, whereas the publican had the disposition to receive the Lord and His kingdom because of his trust in the mercy of God. We can have the dispositions of both the publican and the Pharisee in our lives. When we close up and put our trust in our own ability and power, God disappears from our vision and life. Then we lead a life without God. Is there any meaning in having eyes but not seeing, having a heart but not loving?
Lord, let me be faithful to Your ways of loving others as You do. Help me not to engage in self-praise and destroy my trust in You.
