Israel saw God as wise and provident, and so worship entailed the praise of God's wisdom. Today's passage from the Book of Wisdom suggests that wisdom and God's "holy spirit" are the same. We Christians know through revelation that "holy spirit" is more than a metaphor for God. Through the promise of Jesus, we believe in God the Holy Spirit, sent by Jesus and the Father to be our guide in the truth. The Holy Spirit teaches us to remember all that Jesus taught us, to grasp something of the mystery of God's wisdom in sending the Word who became flesh and dwelt amongst us.
There is a human wisdom, a calculating wisdom, which is usually important for the management of our lives, as the second half of today's Gospel reminds us. But there is another wisdom, a divine wisdom, a wisdom that looks more deeply into things and does not count the cost: the wisdom of the Cross. It is by that wisdom that we must try to live.
Lord, set us free from the limitations of mere earthly wisdom. Teach us to live by the divine and loving wisdom of the Cross.
