In today's Gospel we hear the final witness of John the Baptist. His words express key elements of Christianity: Jesus' heavenly origin, the loving relationship between the Father and the Son, faith, and eternal life. John the Baptist has ardently proclaimed Jesus as the redeemer of the world and source of eternal life. Today's text, however, also reveals that many refused to accept John's witness. This reminds us that the early Church met with real struggles when spreading Christ's message.
Standing before the high priest and Sanhedrin, Peter concisely and courageously proclaims the Good News to them. He, the Apostles and the Holy Spirit witness to Christ in one united voice. When the high priest inquires as to why they persist in speaking about Jesus in spite of being ordered to stop, Peter and the Apostles reply frankly, "We must obey God rather than men."
The early Church had its challenges. We too struggle today to witness effectively to Christ. It is sometimes more socially acceptable and convenient to disregard our mission to proclaim Christ in our words and deeds. Today's readings encourage us with role models who respond bravely to God's call to witness in their lives.
Lord, when I am faced with the choice, help me to obey God rather than men.
