Today's Gospel is the wonderful story told by John of the healing of a blind man. He is looked down on by people around, his blindness thought to be the result of his own sin or the sin of a parent. But Jesus comes and knows that there is someone special here. He enables the man to open his eyes and see. But it is much more than physical sight that he gains. Unlike many of those around him he comes to be aware and to believe that the One who healed him is no less than the Messiah. And he worships his Lord and becomes a follower. There is a parallel in the First Reading from the First Book of Samuel. Samuel is sent to anoint the future king of Israel. He is sure that the eldest son, an imposing young man, is the one. But no. "Man looks at appearances but the Lord looks at the heart." And it is the youngest son, away in the fields looking after the sheep, who is chosen. He is David. We should thank God that we, in God's mysterious ways, have been chosen to know the Way of Jesus and enabled to see the Way that is Truth and Life. It is up to us to follow that Way.
