"Jesus was setting out on a journey," are the opening words of today's Gospel. That journey, of course, is the Way to Jerusalem and all that that means for Jesus, and it also is the context for today's story. A man comes up to Jesus asking what he should do to gain eternal life. In reply, Jesus quotes from the Ten Commandments, although he only mentions those commandments which speak of how we treat other people. The man says he has kept them from his youngest days. Then, says Jesus, there is just one thing he lacks - to rid himself of his wealth, share it with the needy and follow Jesus (on the road to Jerusalem). This the man cannot do. "How hard is it for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!" is Jesus' reaction. On hearing these words the disciples are shocked. For them wealth is a sign of God's blessings. If the rich cannot be saved, then who can be? But Jesus is turning things upside down. It is not having that is a sign of God's presence in my life. The true sign is when I share what I have (much or little) with others. Life is not about how much I can get but how much I can give. In the world of the Kingdom, when everyone gives, every one gets. That is not the world we are living in. The Kingdom on earth has not yet come. What am I doing about it?

Your Kingdom come;Your will be done on earth.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians may use literature, art and the mass-media to greater advantage in order to favour a culture which defends and promotes the values of the human person.
