We cannot be related to God in prayer, worship and love if we are not also related to others in love. Acts of worship and pious practices have no value before God if we refuse to live in a love-relationship with others so "leave your gift before the altar and go first be reconciled." Such is the urgency of reconciliation. It is not what I do that pleases God. It is how I treat another that makes me human and God-like.
"Love one another as I have loved you." This is the only commandment Jesus emphasized with his very life. At the end of our life on earth we will be judged on this one commandment. How have I loved my wife/husband, brother/sister, son/daughter, neighbour? Jesus would ask Peter after his resurrection: Do you really love me? Before entrusting the Church to him. "Feed my lambs, feed my sheep."
The early Church's symbol was "Agape", a love-feast where everyone is welcome and loved and no one is excluded.
At every Eucharist we are invited and summoned by God to see the face of the Divine in the other. Can I make space for the other - the stranger - for the enemy to enter and become friend and not enemy?
Lord, teach me the way to love as You loved.
