There were several men with the qualifications to take the place of Judas among the Twelve. Only one would be selected, and as Peter's prayer indicates, God knows the hearts of all people. That is a comforting thought - despite our weaknesses and imperfections, and the many ways in which we might be misunderstood, God knows what is inside of us. The opinions of others and outward appearances count for very little. Let us not judge others in a superficial way, and let us not wear a mask or put on an act in our own conduct. God knows who we really are!

The commandment to love one another is simple - not easy! It is more than just a feeling or sentiment - it is the way that we know God and are in turn known by Him. Love is a willingness to lay down our lives for others. This does not necessarily mean that we have to die for them but that we are willing to make their well-being and happiness an important part of our lives. Only by love can we become a friend of Jesus - and friend is something very special. It means that Jesus shares with us everything that he has received from the Father - we become part of the life of the Trinity. But we need to remember - only love, self-giving love, will allow these things to happen.

Lord, I pray that I may be Your friend.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
