The first reading describes the missionary work of the apostle, Philip. Although he was expelled from Jerusalem, he moved on to preach the word in the city of Samaria. Historically, Samaritans were descendants of Israelites and foreigners living in Israel after most of the people were exiled. Therefore, the Jews despised the Samaritans as people of "mixed" or "unclean blood". In Samaria, however, Philip drew crowds through his proclamation of the Messiah.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had received the word of God, Peter and John were sent there. While Peter and John were praying, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit. The manifestation of the Holy Spirit upon the Samaritans is a sign that God is confirming the work of Philip who, although rejected by his own people, had reached out to Samaritans and non-Jews. It is important to note that Philip did not allow the persecution he experienced in Jerusalem, to deter him from carrying out the mission entrusted by Jesus.

These days, the persecutions and restrictions against Christians are increasing in many parts of the world. Some of these are taking place at our own doorsteps. Do the persecutions, challenges and restrictions make us want to 'keep silent or to avoid these issues? After all, as it is stated in the second reading, why should we fear if we have a clear conscience about what we are doing.

Lord, help me be courageous in proclaiming my faith.
