"How much more so!" or its equivalent is a phrase which serves as a key-concept in guiding us to a deeper understanding of important passages of the Bible. In Jesus' preaching, it is an invitation to contemplation and to serene hope. Of course, Bible translations vary. Thus in today's first reading, the translation may be "after such a gift". St Paul invites us to meditate on the wondrous love of God manifested in the fact that Jesus came to save us. Meditation guides us from a consideration of the greatest possible gift to all the lesser, ordinary gifts that we need, and so teaches us to be certain that God's providential love, will always surround and protect us. God is always watching over us.
Jesus invites us to look at the birds of the air and to consider the lilies of the field and to see how God takes care of them (Mt 6:25-34; Lk 12:22-32). Then, from this meditation and contemplation, we understand more deeply how much more God takes care of us, who are created in God's own image and likeness!
God, our Father, teach that there is no need to be afraid of anything, because it has pleased You to give us the gift of Your Kingdom.
