When we know God personally, life for us is very different. The author of Colossians prays fervently that his followers will have this knowledge. If they do, they will be filled with the desire to conduct their lives in a way pleasing to God. This personal knowledge will also give them the ability to endure everything with patience and joy. It is important in our spiritual life to seek to know God personally rather than just knowing about Him. The first transforms, while the second fills our heads with ideas and fears that can lead to confusion or pride.
Peter suddenly felt very unworthy and sinful in the presence of Jesus. Jesus had just astounded them by showing them where to cast their nets. Peter knew that Jesus was a holy man sent from God and he felt his own imperfections very keenly. He wanted Jesus to move on - to leave - because he felt so uncomfortable. But Jesus came to call very ordinary people, not saints or spiritually perfect individuals. He assured Peter that he could continue fishing, but from now on his nets would be cast for human souls. He would gather them together and win them over for God. We should ask ourselves not if we are good or worthy enough to serve God, but whether we are humble enough to allow God to use us. God does extraordinary things with very ordinary people, complete with all their weaknesses. Jesus will show us where to cast our nets.
Lord, help me to humbly serve You.
