The Jewish custom of the presentation of a child had two purposes: to purify the mother and to consecrate the child to God. Through such a ceremony, the child was set apart and dedicated to God. So Jesus' life is given over to the Father from the beginning.

Centuries earlier, Malachi had prophecied that one day the Lord would come suddenly into his Temple (3:1). Today God has finally come, but in a quiet and vulnerbale way - as an infant. Will people recognize God?

Simeon and Anna are people of prayer. It is their intimacy with God which makes them sensitive to God's presence. In this child of flesh and blood they recognize God. Simeon suddenly realizes that the wait is over; God is saving his people. Simeon now has no fear, not even of death.

If you had the chance, what would you offer to God? What would you present?

When you set something apart for God's sake, God makes it holy. It may be as simple as setting aside time for prayer, giving funds to help the needy, or offering your time to serve others. God delights in what you offer with love.

Lord, please accept what I offer to You today.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
