The purest form of worship is justice and compassion. Isaiah rebuked Israel for remembering ritual but forgetting justice. He used the example of Sodom and Gomorrah, two ancient cities destroyed because of their cruelty and mistreatment of the poor, weak, and strangers. He advised them to cleanse themselves by seeking justice, rescuing the oppressed, and defending widows and orphans.
If we are not careful, religion can become a way of 'bribing God' and indulging in selfishness. Let us worship God in the way God desires.
Humility is a sign that one's heart is with God. If we use our religion to lord it over others or to inflate our ego, then our hearts are far from God. Our faith should never be used to put someone down or exalt one's self. If we ease the burdens of others and encourage them along the way, then we are truly walking in God's ways.
Lord, may I always practice justice and compassion.

Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others.
