The disciples were desperate to know when Jesus was going to expel the Romans and re-establish the kingdom of Israel. In effect, he did not respond to their questions; he told them that it was God's business, not theirs. They were to wait for the gift of the Spirit. As Jesus ascended, all stood around gawking at the sight. The two figures - probably angels - told them to keep their eyes here on earth, for there was still much work to be done. The mission of the apostles was just beginning. Our business as Christians is here on earth, doing God's will and serving others.
Jesus told his disciples to preach the good news to all creation - not just humans. The entire world and every created thing were redeemed by Christ. God gave the whole world a new lease on life, for all creation was at peace and reconciled to God. This is very important today - Pope Francis urges us to have care for our Common Home - the earth - not only because it makes sense but out of respect for God. To care for creation is to honour God.
Lord, may I honour you in all that I do.
