When we are humble, God shines through us powerfully. Elijah was only one man but he boldly encouraged King Ahab and the people of Israel to abandon popular false gods and return to the Lord. Elijah's utter dependence on God enabled the possibility that God worked through Elijah: miraculously bringing fire to the sacrifice and bringing rain to Israel after a long drought. Elijah was weak, yet the unceasing power of God was manifested in his submissive life to God.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells us not to be angry with people who have hurt us, but rather, to go and be reconciled with them. Reconciliation is risky. It takes great courage and humility. Indeed, when we dare to forgive someone and reconcile, God is already at work.

Today we celebrate St. Anthony of Padua. In 1222, still in his twenties, Anthony attended a gathering of Dominicans and Franciscans. He was suddenly asked to give the homily at Mass. Although he had no time to prepare, he obeyed. Anthony relied on God and the Spirit worked powerfully that day. He had been quietly studying by himself. Anthony's knowledge of Scripture and his loving manner of speaking touched the hearts of many. The humble Anthony eventually became a university teacher, Provincial superior and instrument of many miracles. He restores what people have lost, humility in improving oneself in intellect and manner of behaviour.
