Ruth is well known for her honesty and loyalty to Naomi. True discipleship calls for honest servant leadership in every aspect. In a consumerist society, the focus tends to be more upon self-glorification devoid of an honest service. To make matters worse, the perceptible role of artificial intelligence nowadays is replacing the human touch that connects people but it also has the negative potential to diminish one's dignity and respect, reducing human beings to mere commodities. Obviously, it defaces the truth that we are creatures made by God in His own image and likeness. Thus, everyone has the right to an honest life and sincere respect; these include the poor, the sick, the helpless, the 'unwanted' and the 'different' of society.
Today we celebrate the feast day of St Rose of Lima, a Dominican tertiary. She was known for her life of severe penance. Out of love for God, she devoted her life to care for the poverty stricken of the city through her own private efforts and works of active charity. Here we have a true and sincere example of discipleship, which can be an inspiration for our wayward society to rectify their biased treatment of workers. Jesus clearly asserts, ''The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted" (v11-12).
Lord, open my eyes to see and extend my hands to serve honestly and humbly thus contribute to a more tolerant society.
