Whenever we feel tired, it is natural for us to take time to recover, this gives our body and mind an opportunity to relax and unwind. However, sometimes, we feel more tired after trying to rest. In reality, it is not enough to give ourselves physical and mental rest. We are made up of body, mind and soul. We give our bodies and minds rest but how many of us give rest for our souls?
The image of rest that Jesus meant applies more to our soul than our minds and bodies. He clearly stated that we will find rest for our souls. For the Jews, the burden of abiding in the Mosaic law applies more to the body and mind, forgetting the deeper purpose. Hence, what happens to the other two components will also affect the soul. When we rest, the result of giving our souls rest has a deeper tangible effect, it will help us to maintain a balance in our lives.
Let us not be shy to come before the Lord and rest in His embrace. God is the only one who can nourish and replenish our souls. It is suggested that the 'yoke' that Jesus is referring to is a double yoke used for two oxen pulling together. Jesus then is saying that He carries the yoke together with us. What Jesus does is to help us go through the pain. Jesus will not treat us as spoilt brats.
Dear Lord, let me learn that true rest is to submit everything to You.
