Jesus has the power to change our lives. We see such a graced change in the life of St. Mary Magdalene. Originally, Mary was under the influence of seven demons (Mk 16:9, Lk 8:2). This is an indication of our human distorted attachment to earthly desires. It portrays a darkened image of ourselves and others from a healthy interaction. However, Jesus freed her from this darkness and she became His disciple.
The Song of Songs reading describes a woman searching for her beloved. Mary had such love for Jesus. Mary loyally stayed with Jesus at His cross and she was at His tomb, overwhelmed with sorrow. She does not recognize the Risen Lord at first. It is only when Jesus calls Mary's name that she turns and recognizes Him. The word for 'turn' in Greek (strapheisa) relates to the word for 'conversion.' In turning, Mary responds to Jesus' call, she lets go of her sorrow and is able to see the Risen Jesus-a moment of grace.
Yet there is more. The Risen Lord gives her a mission - to tell the disciples that He is alive and ascending to the Father. So, St. Thomas Aquinas calls Mary Magdalene the 'Apostle to the Apostles.' Jesus not only liberates Mary from evil, He makes her His witness and a saint.
Has Jesus ever called my name? What mission does Jesus give to me?
Lord Jesus, free me from any darkness in my life and light up my heart. Make me Your witness.
