The readings propose to us themes of judgment, mercy, and the importance of true conversion beyond outward appearances. They invite us into a sacred examination of the heart. St Paul reminds us that God's judgment is not based on appearances or status, but on truth and interior disposition. "God shows no partiality." He sees not the robes we wear, but the love we live. His mercy is vast-but it calls us to real conversion, not mere ritual.
Jesus speaks with sorrowful clarity to the Pharisees. Their meticulous observance of religious law has become a veil, obscuring the heart of the Law itself: love. They tithe mint and rue, yet neglect justice and the love of God. Their burdensome rules weigh down others, while they themselves remain untouched. Jesus does not condemn the Law- He restores its soul.
True religion is not about outward appearances-it is about seeing others with compassion. It is not about claiming the front seat, but kneeling in service and prayer. Love is sacrificial; it lifts burdens, not adds to them.
On this Feast of St Teresa of Avila, we remember a woman who lived this truth. A reformer, mystic, and servant of God, Teresa sought not prestige but purity of heart. Her prayer was deep, her love fierce, her fidelity unwavering. She reminds us that faith is not static-it is a journey of continual surrender.
Lord, let our conversion be not cosmetic, but courageous-rooted in love, and radiant with mercy.
