As human beings, we have a deep-seated need for security, devoting much of our lives to ensure we have physical and financial security for ourselves and our loved ones. This need is so great that we often forget what we already have, focusing instead on our anxiety about the needs of tomorrow, growing avaricious and grasping for material comforts like the rich man in the Gospel’s parable.

However, the first reading today reminds us that we are always in God’s care. We are His works of art, created to live the good life He has meant for us to live from the beginning. He always ensures that we have enough for today and invites us to trust that He will provide for our tomorrow. This message is echoed in the Gospel reading, where Jesus warns against avarice and tells us the parable of the rich man who wanted to store his excess grain, but lost his life that very night. He questions the hoarding of resources and reminds us that life is not made secure by what we own, but by God’s providence and the willingness to do His will.

Today, we are invited to look beyond our insecurities, to trust in His providence and to share what we have with one another. As we continue to pray for mental health ministries, we ask for the grace to let go of our fear of scarcity and embrace the abundance of God’s love.
