Jesus is the Prince of Peace. So why does He say, “Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Lk 12:51). Though Jesus is indeed the Good Shepherd Who gently calls us to come to Him and rest, He warns us that if we follow Him and live according to His teachings, we will face opposition. If we truly live according to the Gospel, sometimes we will come into conflict with strangers, co-workers, friends and even family. What are we to do amidst such conflict?

The first reading encourages us to know and linger in the deep love of God. We are invited to pause, feel Christ dwelling in our hearts, and so receive inner strength from the Spirit (cf Eph 3:16-17). God’s love for us is greater than any conflict or challenge that we face. Am I in conflict with someone because of Jesus or Gospel values? Trust in Jesus for He will guide us in spite of these oppositions.

Today the Church remembers Pope St John Paul II. He calmly but bravely spoke out against dictators and Communism. He told people living under such governments, “Be not afraid.” Thus, we are also strengthened by these words to stand up for what is right and the Gospel values.

Lord Jesus, help me to feel You dwelling in my heart. Fill me with love. Give me wisdom in speech and courage in action.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer you everything I do this day. I offer you my prayers, thoughts, words, joys and sufferings in union with the Eucharistic sacrifice of your Son Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit who guided and empowered Jesus be my guide and strength so that I can be a witness to your love. Amen.
