In a world that rightly values equality, education, freedom and independence, what St Paul says – wives should be subject to their husbands – can seem difficult to accept. However, we must read these words in their proper context. Christian marriage is not founded on domination or control, but on mutual self-giving and love. Above all, both husband and wife are called to place Christ at the centre of their relationship. Women today rightly seek education and opportunities to develop their God-given gifts. A wife remains an equal partner in the marital union, created in the image of God and worthy of respect and honour.

The often-overlooked challenge in this passage is actually directed to husbands. Paul commands them to love their wives just as Christ loves the Church and gave Himself up for her. Christ's love is expressed through humble service, sacrifice and total self-giving. A husband who loves as Christ loves cherishes his wife, honours her dignity and remains faithful through both peaceful seasons and times of difficulty. The message of Paul is therefore not about who holds authority, but about who is willing to love more deeply. Both husband and wife are called to let go of selfishness, forgive generously and seek the good of the other. Marriage is a covenant of love, not a competition for superiority. When Christ is at the centre, mutual self-giving does not diminish freedom. May all husbands and wives heed St Paul's words and discover anew the beauty of Christ-like love.
