Simon the Zealot and Jude Thaddaeus are celebrated together because they were fellow Apostles who preached and were martyred together. The readings remind us that as Christians, we have been baptised in Christ and are members of His household in the line of His Apostles. As members of Christ’s body, we have the privilege of drawing from the wellsprings of His divinity for our daily sustenance. Do we truly appreciate the enormous significance of this blessing? The Apostles ate, drank and lived with Christ when He was alive. They were always in His presence, learning, imitating Him and internalising His teachings and values. How might we ever keep Christ in our presence today? First, we can read and reflect on His Word in the Scriptures daily. Second, we can avail ourselves of the opportunity to receive Him in the Eucharist. Third, we can constantly keep Him in our presence by praying and speaking to Him in the course of the day. Through these means, we live out the reality of being members of God’s household. Moreover, recalling the lyrics of the popular hymn “Go Tell Everyone,” it is incumbent on us to preach the Good News and go tell everyone that His Kingdom has come. This feast day enjoins us to reinvigorate our faith so that we can boldly proclaim with words and with our lives, that Christ's loving sacrifice has won the victory over death and sin. We can indeed rejoice and be glad!
