At first glance, the phrase "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" sounds almost like a motto of a religious congregation. It echoes the life of the early Christian community, where believers held everything in common and distribution was made according to need. Yet this phrase comes from Karl Marx's Critique of the Gotha Programme (1875), rooted in an ideology that assumed human beings, given sufficient material abundance, would naturally work for the common good without coercion.

The tragic flaw of this vision lies in its understanding of the human person. As Catholics, we acknowledge that humanity is wounded by original sin; left to ourselves, we tend towards self-interest, greed, and domination. History painfully confirms that communism has failed because it ignored this wounded nature and attempted to replace interior conversion with external structures.

Christian sharing is fundamentally different. It is not enforced by ideology but lived by a people transformed by grace. Comparing communism with a religious who professes the vow of poverty, the difference becomes clear: the religious renounces freely out of love. This way of life flows from being "born of the Spirit" (Jn 3:8), for only a converted heart can give without calculation. In short, true fraternity cannot be manipulated; authentic sharing begins not with systems, but with conversion of heart, so that, renewed in Christ, we may become a blessing to those in need.

Lord, I choose and offer freely.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day jul be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
For priests in crisis.
Let us pray for priests going through moments of crisis in their vocation, that they may find the accompaniment they need and that communities may support them with understanding and prayer.
