Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and doing great wonders and signs. Some men from the synagogue were concerned with what Stephen was doing and began arguing with him; however, they couldn't understand his wisdom. Similar to what happened to Jesus, Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin and falsely accused of saying things against the Holy Place, Moses, God and the Law. The closing thought of this passage is powerful - Stephen's face was like the face of an angel. He truly was filled with the Holy Spirit.
The day before, Jesus had fed the crowd of 5000 and then had gone away alone to pray. The crowd decided to go looking for Jesus and when they had found Him, Jesus accused them of looking for more bread when they should have been looking for the food that gives eternal life. This is also what we all search for - and yet what is this food to which Jesus referred? As Jesus told the people, it is to believe in the One whom God has sent. What does it mean to truly believe? To believe does not mean to have knowledge but to have a personal relationship with Jesus.
Lord, help me to truly believe.
