The pursuit of knowledge is something praiseworthy, but to what extent do we go to pursue it? When we gain much knowledge, does it help us to understand our faith or the world around us? Personally, the more I learn and know, the more I do not understand. Think about it - what we know about our world is still very little in the bigger scheme of things and what we know of God is even lesser.
The hidden danger is that we allow created things to occupy our hearts and minds. God becomes a subject and an object of study and nothing more. At the end of our life, none of this accumulated knowledge can save us. This is what Prophet Hosea warns us in today's first reading. We should stop turning created things into idols and instead return to the one true God.
This is exactly what Jesus said in response to the question of which is the greatest commandment - to love God with all our being and to love our neighbour as ourselves. We do not need a Bachelor's Degree or a PhD to do this. Anyone can love as long as we will ourselves to do it. Love is simple as long as we let go of preconceived ideas about people and things. Let us pray for wisdom to love and walk in the ways of the Lord and not of the world.
O God of love, I love you with all my being.
