Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of St Joseph — son of David, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and earthly father of Jesus Christ. Though Scripture tells us little about him, Joseph's quiet strength, obedience, and faith reveal the heart of fatherhood. The readings today draw our attention to three dimensions of this vocation — protection, faith, and authority.
In the first reading, God declares Himself a Father to the son of David, promising to preserve his sovereignty forever. Here, fatherhood is expressed as protection and preservation — an enduring commitment to care for and sustain life. In the second reading, Abraham is called our father in faith, for we inherit the gift of belief through his trust in God's promises. From him, we learn that fatherhood nurtures faith in others and passes on the hope that anchors generations.
Finally, in the Gospel, Joseph is given authority to name Jesus, signifying his role as guardian and teacher. Yet Joseph's fatherhood is deeply rooted in the Fatherhood of God — it is God who entrusts Jesus to him, and through Jesus, we are made children of the same Father.
As we continue to pray for disarmament and peace this month, we are reminded that God is Father of all. As His children, we are called to reflect His love — protecting one another, nurturing faith, submitting to His authority, and laying down arms against our brothers and sisters in the name of peace.
Our Father in heaven, protect us, nurture our faith, and help us submit to Your will.
