St Peter reminds us that we belong to God at great cost — ransomed not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, the Lamb without blemish. He lifts our eyes to the astonishing truth that our lives are not accidents of fate, nor possessions of our own making. We have been lovingly redeemed through the self-giving sacrifice of Jesus. When this truth sinks into our hearts, gratitude reshapes our priorities. Faith becomes more than words; it becomes trust in the God Who has already given everything for us. We begin to love earnestly from a pure heart, knowing we have been born anew through the living and abiding Word of God.

This sheds light on the Gospel scene. As Jesus walks the road to Jerusalem, He speaks plainly of rejection, suffering, and death. Yet the disciples, still imagining glory in worldly terms, ask for places of honour at His right and left. They do not yet understand that His throne will be a cross. The ransom that St Peter proclaims is revealed here as Christ’s own self-offering: “the Son of Man Himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

To belong to such a Lord is to follow His way of humble service. Redeemed by love, we are called to live in love — not seeking status, but giving ourselves generously for others.
