Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. For centuries, many wise, learned and holy persons have attempted to explain the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. Interestingly, however, until this day, it remains one of the most difficult dogmas of the Church for Catholics to understand.

The Scripture readings today show us “glimpses” of the Trinity. The first reading narrates how, on encountering God, Moses proclaims, “Lord, Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness.” In his letter, St Paul blesses the believers in Corinth with the words, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” In his Gospel, John reveals that “God loves the world so much that He gave His only Son…” so that the world might be saved.

While revealing only “glimpses” of the Trinity, the readings in fact also present to us with the true essence of the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity — that God is love. The Father, Son and Spirit share a profound communion of love, a love which they pour out upon the whole of creation. Each Person of the Holy Trinity is involved in an eternal and loving relationship with each other and with the whole of humanity. They invite us too, to a free response of loving God and loving others.

Most Holy Trinity, teach us to love as You do.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day jul be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
