What is it like to become a little child? The Gospel does not mean that we should be childish or immature. But we need to develop certain qualities that children have, unless they have been wounded or warped by adults. They are eager learners and filled with wonder. They question constantly, and will gleefully hear a story over and over, often squealing with delight. And most of all, they are trusting and affectionate. Today Jesus declares not to harm any children in any way for their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of His Father in heaven. We are tasked to cultivate a consistent culture of care, protection and safeguarding for children. It is crucial!

At the same time, we are also called to develop child-like qualities, not childish behaviours. These are the qualities that will bring us closer to God. Pride and prejudice have no place in authentic Christian living; what more childish and self- centred behaviours.

On this memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, we remember that we are surrounded and guided by their spiritual presence and that we are never alone. As beloved children of God, we are cared for lovingly by the Father of love through the angels. Just like the Father Who cares for us, we need to care for and protect children from abuse of any kind. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain in all circumstances a safe environment for them.
