It is significant that the first people to become aware of Jesus'
resurrection are His women friends. His male disciples, we know, had fled
during the time of Jesus' passion and death. Peter had sworn three times
that he never even knew Jesus. It was the women, we are told, who
faithfully and bravely stood at the foot of the cross, ready to be
identified as the friend of this executed criminal. After His death, they took
care of His burial. The discovery of the empty tomb on Sunday morning
must have been a terrible shock to them. Who had stolen the body? Then
suddenly and unexpectedly they run into Jesus Himself. They immediately
cling to Jesus; they do not want Him ever to leave them again. But they
have to let go. There is a job to be done. They have to bring a message
to Jesus' disciples, whom He calls His brothers, to wait for Him in
Galilee where they will see Him. Galilee is their home and that is where
they will find Jesus from now on. It is true also for us in our own
lives. The Risen Jesus can be found wherever we are, above all in the
situations of our daily life. That is the meaning of Easter. The Risen Jesus
is with us always and everywhere.
Help us, Lord Jesus, to recognise Your presence in all the places and
people we come across. Help us to help others find Him in their lives
also.
