Whe Emmaus travellers became downcast and despondent. Yet in His
awesome goodness and incomprehensible wisdom Jesus leads them into
liberation. He does it by leading them through the process of reflection,
enlightenment and revelation.
He reveals Himself when 'he made as if to go on' (Lk. 24:28). Another
version of the Bible simplies this phrase with a word "acted". Is Jesus
a hypocritical actor? No! He acted because in reality He never leaves
or forsakes us. He is always with us. He merely acted in order to bring
the travellers to a higher level of being and a purer form of desire,
to bring them out of their egocentric concern for self to the care of
"the other". Only when the travellers became ready and open receptacles
for truth did He reveal himself to them.
Here we see Jesus as indeed the greatest teacher/facilitator, healer
and deliverer. He wants to turn our mourning into joy. Yes, He wants to
lead us through all our disappointments and hopelessness to the great
truth - the God within us who is always with us. Only when we come to
this truth are we set free to return to our people with joy and to
proclaim with our hearts that Christ has risen indeed.
Both readings point to one thing - in Jesus we have a truly awesome
God. There is not only power in His personhood but also mighty power and
healing in His name.
Thank You, Jesus, for being our awesome God. Thank You for loving us.
