On the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, there is an imprint on a large stone in the ancient Church of the Ascension. Legend has it that it is a footprint left behind by Jesus when He ascended. We need not be so literal, but there is a profound truth beneath the surface. Jesus was here. He is not a myth or legend. He is human, and He is Divine. He returned to God, and He will return to us. We are never separated from Him, and the life of the world will never be the same. This does not mean that we will not struggle and sometimes suffer, and in the Gospel reading He informs the disciples that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer in order to enter into His glory. The disciples return after the ascension filled with joy and praise for God. The victory has been won and we belong to God. There is still work to do, however, and Jesus insists that the entire world hear the good news. The angels in Acts chide the bystanders for gawking at the sky, and insist that here on earth is where the action is. This is where we will find Jesus, and where we will serve Him. Relieved of fear, and consoled by the knowledge that we are loved and count for much in God's eyes, let us get on with the holy work that He gives us.
Lord, use me to bring the good news of salvation to others, especially those most in need of it.
