Scripture very frequently speaks of God's presence, but it often speaks about it in a rather indirect way. Many of the names of people in the bible contain the name of God: "Michael" means "Who is like God"; "Raphael" means "God is my healer"; "Zechariah" means "God remembers". The occurrence of these names is a daily reminder that God is near. So too with other phrases. When Jesus says to His frightened disciples "It is I. Do not be afraid", both phrases are a reminder of the presence of God. To Jesus' Jewish disciples, "It is I" would have sounded like an echo of God's name, "I am who am". Each time God enters into our human lives, He encourages us with the words "Do not be afraid". Again, when His Jewish disciples heard Jesus saying this they would have felt the encouragement of God's saving presence.
It is particularly important to note that the disciples are in great difficulties when Jesus comes. The story is not just a miracle story: it is also a parable. When we are in any kind of difficulty, Jesus will always be there, bringing God's presence and providential care to us.
Lord, there is much in our world to make us anxious and afraid. Come to us through all the storms of life and bring us Your saving power.
