Who do people say that Jesus is? Jesus asks me to say who He is - not just what I've heard other people saying about Him, what newspapers say, or what I've read about Him in some book. In the deep of my heart, from my experience of meeting Him in my life, who do I believe He is, what do I confess Him to be? Peter's answer was a confession of faith in Jesus, that He was the expected 'anointed one', the Christ. It was a faith-answer, which was a gift from God that Peter received. We receive the same gift of faith in our baptism and life-long growing into Christ. It's that faith that makes us able to recognise who Jesus really is. In response to Peter's faith, Jesus gave him a new name, a "Christ"-name, a name that had a meaning which indicated Peter's role and responsibility, his dedication and commitment. In baptism, Christians are given (or take) a new name for the same reason: to show a dedication and commitment, the taking on of a new role and responsibility. This is the real reason for the custom of using "Christian" names, instead of or in addition to a person's family name. So, who do people say that I am? Whether or not I use my baptismal, Christian name, do people recognise my Christian dedication and role in the way that I live in my family, in my community and workplace, in my society and country, as well as in the Church that I go to on Sundays?
Lord, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. I honour You today and everyday.
