The two readings in today's liturgy of the word focus on the call to discipleship. In the first reading we read of Isaiah's dramatic call to a prophetic ministry. He sees an awesome heavenly vision and is overwhelmed by a sense of his uncleanness. Then the angel from heaven touches his lips with a burning coal - a symbol of Yahweh's purifying love. Having been cleansed and transformed, he eagerly offers himself for the divine mission.
In the Gospel Jesus tells us, in less dramatic fashion, that the true disciple must expect to bear the cross of his Lord and Master. The purifying fire comes gradually - not in an instant as with Isaiah, but in the day-to-day demands of love and service. But Jesus adds that the power of God will protect His chosen disciple. God cares for every sparrow and every blade of grass. He does not care less for us, although He permits the purifying trials precisely to cleanse us of our selfishness and ambition. Whoever perseveres in trust will experience the new courage of Isaiah, and will know the power of God at work in his or her heart.
Lord, give us the grace to know the power of the Risen Lord in our hearts even as Isaiah experienced and was transformed for mission.
