The Gospel scene takes place after the Resurrection. The Risen Jesus and His disciples have just finished the meal they have shared together by the lakeshore. Jesus proceeds to ask Peter if Peter really loves Him. He asks the question not once but three times. The significance is not lost on Peter. It brings him back to the painful scenes where three times he had sworn to people that he did not know Jesus and had nothing to do with Him. He had done this in spite of claiming earlier that, even if all the others betrayed Jesus, he would not. He is now reminded of all this as Jesus asks Peter if he loves Jesus more than the others do. This time he is much more careful. He will only speak for himself and affirm his love for his Lord. And of this there is absolutely no doubt. He only speaks the truth when he says, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Maybe the others love Jesus more but that does not matter. Peter only speaks for himself. And that is all we can do too. We do not have to be better than others, only try to make ourselves better lovers of Jesus.
Teach me, Lord, that the only thing that matters is my love for You.
