Here a Pharisee lawyer, trained in theology, asks Jesus which is the most basic of the six hundred and thirteen laws and observances. Jesus quotes first the Shema, the 'Hear, O Israel,' of Deut. 6:4-5. 'You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might', that is, with all your knowledge, will, feelings, with all your life and energies, with all your possessions. However, there is a second like it: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' This is a quotation from Leviticus 19:18. Where Jesus differs from other rabbis is that He places the twofold commandment side by side, and insists that true love of God must be enfleshed in the love of our neighbour. All the Scriptures 'hang on' these two commandments. So the whole will of God in Scripture is summed up in the double command of love. The Last Judgement scene of 25:31-46 will express all of this in a graphic form.

Lord, let my love for You be seen in my love for my neighbours.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
