"Anyone who has taken a bath is completely clean and does not have to wash himself except for his feet." Baffling at first glance that this part of the body should be of prime concern in the preparation of the Passover Feast. And yet, if we note again and understand who is doing the washing of the disciples' feet and why, then we can more easily connect the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, the Life. No one goes to the Father except by me." To pass over from bondage to freedom, from death to life one has to follow the footsteps of Him who has come to show the Way. "Feet" here, like so many other analogies in the Bible, is a symbol or an allegory of a greater truth. Surely, we can easily see that in the final analysis, it is the feet that lead us to life or death depending on whether we choose to follow the footsteps of Jesus or allow our feet to carry us astray.
